Rajasthan Rivers, Drainage and Lakes GK
This lesson studies Rajasthan through water. In exams, rivers are not asked only as names. Questions connect rivers with basins, tributaries, drainage direction, towns, forts, dams, lakes, soils, climate, forests, wildlife parks and confluence points.

1. Drainage System Of Rajasthan#
Rajasthan drainage is divided into three broad directions:
- Bay of Bengal drainage: Chambal, Banas, Banganga, Gambhir and many eastern rivers ultimately connect with the Yamuna-Ganga system.
- Arabian Sea drainage: Luni, Mahi, Sabarmati and West Banas drain towards Gujarat, the Gulf of Khambhat or the Rann of Kutch side.
- Inland drainage: Seasonal rivers of the desert and semi-arid belt end in salt lakes, playas, sandy plains or local depressions.
Exam Rule#
If a river flows east or south-east, connect it with Chambal-Banas-Yamuna memory. If it flows west or south-west, connect it with Luni-Mahi-Sabarmati-Gujarat memory. If it disappears in desert depressions, connect it with inland drainage and salt lakes.
2. Primary Basins And Secondary Basins#
A basin is the land area drained by a river and its tributaries. Rajasthan questions often ask the main basin and then a smaller tributary/sub-basin.

Towns And Kasbas Around Luni#
Ajmer, Beawar, Sojat, Pali, Jodhpur outskirts, Balotra, Jalore and Sanchore are important settlement memories around the Luni catchment. Do not memorize them as one straight river-bank list; remember them as basin towns.

4. West Banas And Sabarmati Side#
West Banas is a south-western river memory. It originates in the Sirohi side and moves towards Gujarat. Do not confuse it with Banas River of eastern Rajasthan, which joins Chambal at Rameshwar.
Exam Difference#
| River |

Common Trap#
Do not treat waterfalls as permanent Himalayan-type rivers. In Rajasthan, most waterfalls become exam-worthy during the monsoon, when seasonal streams and rocky plateaus become active.
